Bruce Hecker, formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away unexpectedly in Boca Raton, Florida, on Saturday, October 19, 2019.
Bruce was born April 22, 1945, to Delmer and Nellie (Troyer) Hecker in Berlin, OH.
He was a 1963 graduate and co-valedictorian of Hiland High School, Berlin OH, received his undergraduate degree in Finance and Investments from Kent State University in 1967 and his MBA from Case Western Reserve University in 1973. Bruce made his career in banking at institutions including Kilbuck Savings Bank, First Knox National Bank, Barnett Bank of Broward County, Florida and retired in 2015 as an Executive Vice President of Sabadell United Bank. During his retirement he enjoyed golfing and trips to see his grandchildren.
While residing in Mount Vernon, Bruce was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Mount Vernon Jaycees and was the President of the Board of the YMCA in 1985. He also spearheaded the development and funding of Yellow Jacket Stadium in 1982. After moving to Florida in 1986, he continued his community involvement. Bruce was the immediate past chair and served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army of Broward County for 30 years. He was honored with the Salvation Army Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Additionally, he was the past chair and member of the Junior Achievement Board of Directors, a member of the Pompano Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Economic Development Council, a past member of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, and was a past member of the SBDC Advisory Board at Florida Atlantic University.
He is survived by his two daughters, Julie George (Larry) of Westerville, OH and Kristen Harding (Mark) of Cincinnati, OH; and adored grandchildren, Kendall and Lindsay George and Erin Harding; his brother Mark (Billie) Hecker of Holmesville, OH and sister Diana (Wayne) Youngen Beaber of Sugarcreek, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents Delmer and Nellie Hecker.
Calling hours will be held at Lasater Funeral Home, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Rd. in Mount Vernon on Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 1-3PM with the funeral at 3PM. A light meal will follow after the service.
