Burdetta M. Cunningham

July 12, 2018

Burdetta Cunningham, age 80, of Fredericktown, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018.

She was born on Jan. 8, 1938 in Howard to the late William and Helen Wagner.

Burdetta had a lifelong thirst for learning. While working as an LPN and raising children at home she completed her RN which allowed her to begin her Obstetric nursing career at the old Mercy Hospital. She earned her RNC-OB in 1989. After thirty years she retired from Knox Community Hospital as the Birthing Center Nurse Manager.

In true fashion, she didn’t stay retired long. She joined the Knox County Adult Education Center as a faculty member for the LPN program. She continued to demonstrate her love of learning and lead by example by earning her MSN from Chamberlain University of Nursing when she was 75 years old. She was an inspirational role model to all her nursing students and peers as she strived to train nursing students to be competent, knowledgeable and compassionate to their fullest ability. This lead to her 2013 Excellence in Practical Nursing Education Award from the Ohio Organization of Practical Nurse Educators. Most recent she was a Knox Technical Center Nursing Instructor/Assistant PN Program Coordinator.

She is survived by her son, William (Karen) Cunningham; daughter, Julie (Gary) O'Brien; three step-children, Gary (Fran) Cunningham, Jack (Angela) Cunningham, Jeffrey Cunningham; brother, Jack Blue; and a sister, Karen (Robert) Rowe; 18 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Cindy Cunningham.

Burdetta was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin Cunningham; son, Brian Cunningham; step-daughter, Jill Cunningham; brothers, Robert and Charles Wagner.

The family will observe private services and burial. The Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is handling the services for the Cunningham family.
