Charles W. Ransom

February 8, 2018

Charles W. “Chuck” Ransom, age 79, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thurs., Feb. 8, 2018 at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

Chuck burst onto this earthly stage on Oct. 13, 1938 in Mount Vernon, growing up in Knox County and tap dancing his way through childhood. Before heading to Muskingum College, he was known as the drum major able to toss his baton over the telephone wires as he led the Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets football parades. Chuck’s early career was as an English teacher before he heard a call to a different stage, attending Bexley Hall in Gambier, OH and becoming an Episcopal priest. Chuck was a caring and dedicated pastor and merged his love of theater with his ministry in his intensely moving dramatic portrayals of biblical characters.  Community theater was a constant throughout Chuck’s adult life, and there was seldom a time he wasn’t running lines for a play or supporting those he loved in theatric endeavors (including as an early donor and supporter of MTVarts). Though the curtain has fallen on this lifetime, his family and friends know “the show will go on” as he is reunited with those who have gone before him. We imagine a heavenly cocktail hour with much laughter, Dewar’s “on some ice in a glass”, some good jazz or bluegrass music and storytelling that if not completely true, should be.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Daryl (Sobehart) Ransom; his daughter, Susan (Sam) McDonald; son, Jonathan (Heather) Ransom; five granddaughters, Maya, Isabel, Ava, Esme and Maeve; a brother, H.R. “Buss” (Lou Ann) Ransom and a wonderful group of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss his love, humor and ghost stories at “the cottage” that scared the bejesus out of generations of kids.

Chuck was preceded in death by his brother Bob Ransom, his mother Bessie L. (Roberts) Ransom, his father Robert D. Ransom and many other relatives including his beloved uncle Pete Roberts.

A memorial service will be held on Sat., Feb. 24, 2018, 1:00pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon, OH.  The Lasater Funeral Home is coordinating the services for the Ransom family.

Memorial contributions may be made to: MTVarts, 812 Coshocton Ave., PMB 168, Mt. Vernon, Ohio 43050 or on their website:
