Donna M. Horton, 82, of Gambier, Ohio, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018, in Henrico County, Virginia.
Donna was born January 22, 1936, in Mount Vernon, OH. Donna grew up on her parents’ dairy farm in the area. As a child, she was active in the 4-H Club. In 4-H, Donna learned to sew and took her Guernsey calf Ginger to the Knox County Fair and to the Ohio State Fair, where she won an award. She was a majorette and learned to play the violin. Donna graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1954. After high school, Donna moved to Columbus where she graduated from Columbus Business School in 1955. While in Columbus, Donna worked as a receptionist and a bookkeeper in the Park Division at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Donna also met the love of her life Bobby Joe Horton, who was in the U.S. Air Force. Donna and Bob married in November 1956, welcomed their first son in October 1957, and spent the next three years in Ayers, Scotland, where Bob was stationed at Prestwick Air Force Base. After returning to the United States, Donna enjoyed being a wife, homemaker, and the mother of two sons. As a young mother, Donna babysat some of the neighborhood children. Donna oversaw moving her family 17 times to new homes as Bob’s career advanced in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Donna and Bob were married for 57 years.
While living in Grove City, Pa., Donna was active in the local hospital auxiliary and served as the organization’s president. Donna enjoyed gardening and making beautiful flower arrangements. Each year, Donna would enter her flower arrangements in the Knox County Fair where she won many ribbons. Donna was active in the Wakatomika Garden Club and served as the club’s president. She was a life-long member of the Grove Church of Christ, Gambier.
Donna was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She adored her children and her four grandchildren, was an excellent cook and loved preparing special meals and spending the holidays with her family and friends. Donna remained close to her girlfriends and high school classmates. She enjoyed attending her high school reunions.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, Esther M. and Woodrow W. Hall and her husband Bobby Joe Horton. Donna is survived by her sons, Jeffrey Lynn (Bonnie) Horton of Richmond, Va., and Mark Steven (Wanda) Horton of Blacksburg, Va.; grandchildren, Jessica Ann Horton, Sarah Elizabeth Horton (Clark) Hutchison all of Richmond, Va; Christopher Robert Stephen Horton of Alexandria, Va., and Lindsay Marie Horton of Colorado Springs, Co; her devoted Dachshund Albert; and many cousins.
Friends may call Saturday, June 30, from 12 noon-2 p.m. at Grove Church of Christ, 7740 Grove Church Road, Gambier, where funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor David Dahlstein officiating. Burial will follow in Union Grove Cemetery. The Lasater Funeral Homes are handling the funeral arrangements for the Horton family.
