Russell G. Biggs, age 87, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at Knox Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on September 13, 1931 in Harrison Twp. and was the son of Harold and Pearl (Ross) Biggs. Russell graduated from Utica High School in 1951 and from Hobart Welding School in Troy, Ohio. He was a United States Army Korean War Veteran from 1951-1953.
Russell was a lifetime member of Grove Church of Christ, where he had served as a Deacon, Elder and Trustee. Employed at Modern Welding in Newark and Columbia Gas of Ohio from which he retired in 1991 after 30 years. After his retirement, Russell was the caretaker of Union Grove Cemetery for 20 years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Ann (Hickman) Biggs to whom he married on March 16, 1958 at Grove Church of Christ; three daughters, Anita (Bob) Hooper, Christine Nerheim, Betsy (Butch) Cherrington; eight grandchildren, Rob Hooper, Rebecca (Bruce) Nation, Richie Perry, Candie (Rick) Wells, Will Perry, Denise (Clint) Randall, Billy (Rebecca Groves) Cherrington, Allen Cherrington; three great-grandchildren, Damien, Aubrie and Josh, a sister, Lulu Bone, sister-in-law, Betty Biggs; along with several nieces and nephews.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Mary Frye, Lucille Parker and Hazel Scott; brothers, Bob and Gerald Biggs; sister-in-law, Anna Mae Biggs; along with four brother-in-law's, Charles Bone, Donald Frye, Ed Parker and Wes Scott.
Graveside memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 in Union Grove Cemetery starting at 11:00 AM with military graveside honors conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. The Lasater Funeral Home is handling the services for the family.
