David Richard Shipman, age 74, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon, Ohio. He was born on June 21, 1947, in Newark, Ohio, to the late Horace and Imogene (Knotts) Shipman.
After graduating from high school, David joined the United States Navy and did 2 tours of duty in Vietnam. He was very proud of his service to his county and was patriotic until the day he passed. Once he retired from the Navy, David worked in Fredericktown at FT Precision. David was a member of the NHRA, (National Hot Rod Association), Kokosing Valley Antique Tractor Club, NRA, and ASPCA, (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). He enjoyed tractor pulls, classic cars, Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, and mostly hosting the annual Shipman family Hog Roast. David was known to his family and close friends for his time “tinkering” in the barn.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane (Grimm) Shipman; a daughter, Wendy (Shipman) McVay; grandchildren, Shelbie McVay, Hunter McVay, Reece Schonauer, Camren Schonauer; great-grandchild, Landon Wells; sisters, Royce “Tootie” Smith, Sue (Jeff) Thompson, Laurie (Doug) Diggins, Denna (Fred) Mick; brothers, Lawrence (Sherry) Shipman, Paul Shipman, Buzz (Dona) Shipman, Randy Mossholder; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Along with his parents, David is preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary Joann Shipman; sisters, Faye Ann Sprang, Jeannie White; brothers, Daniel Pierce, Wayne Shipman and James Shipman.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, from 4-7 PM at the Snyder Funeral Home-Lasater Chapel; 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021, starting at 11:00 AM with Rev. Mearle Griffith officiating. Burial will follow in South Lawn Cemetery in Utica, Ohio, with Military Honors.
