In May, 1934 Joanne Elaine Facey Bowman began an 86-year journey that ‘ended’ on All Saints ’ Day, November 1, 2020, surrounded by her husband of 67 years, Robert (Bob), four boys and extended family members. Having made her decision to follow Christ as a youngster, and having lived an exemplary life as a follower of his, she was welcomed into life eternal; exchanging the physical challenges of her last few years for “treasures beyond the blue”.
Born to Harry William and Berthelda Suzanne (Ballentine) Facey, Joanne spent her earliest years in Inkster and Larimore, North Dakota. After graduating from Larimore High School, she enrolled at Olivet Nazarene College where she met and married her husband, Bob. In the years that followed Bob and Joanne would live in Kankakee, IL, Larimore, ND, Pasadena, TX and Woodbridge, VA before finally settling in Mount Vernon Ohio, in the fall of 1975. Along the way Joanne and Bob had four sons and, together, they made numerous dear friends while creating many cherished memories.
Joanne was employed for 23 years at Mount Vernon Nazarene University retiring as the Director of Student Financial Aid in 2003. In 1999 she was honored as the Staff Member of the Year, a recognition that meant a great deal to her. Joanne’s favorite memories from her MVNU years involved helping countless students and their families secure the resources to finance their college education. Following her retirement, Joanne and Bob made frequent trips around the country, visiting friends and family.
In addition to her husband, Joanne is survived by four sons; Steve (Cathy) of New Rockford, ND; John (Janie) of Bloomington, IL; Phil (Jenni) of Mt. Gilead, OH; Brian (Bettina) of Hines, OR; sisters Lucille Sewell of Amarillo, TX and Janice (Jim) of Spring Arbor, MI; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Harley J “Bud” Facey and a sister Marian Ormsbee.
A celebration of life service will be held at Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene (16001 Glen Road, Mount Vernon) on Sunday, November 8 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the MVNU general scholarship fund.
