John L. Hayes, 81 of Fredericktown passed away at Knox Community Hospital on February 22, 2021. He was born to Gerald C. and Reva T. (White) Hayes on November 30, 1939 in Mount Vernon.
John was an US Air Force Veteran serving from 1958 – 1962. He was a member of the gold prospectors of America. John was a long time member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. He spent most of his career as a barber and was known by many as “John the Barber of Butler.” He has lived in Fredericktown for the past 20 years and could often be seen on his scooter with his dog riding around town. There was nothing he enjoyed more than visiting with his many friends and family. He never met a stranger. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and scooters, traveling, reading about history, rock collecting, working with his hands on many projects including mechanical, metal working, wood working and hand carving.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn (Boone) Hayes; sons Stephen (Nancy) Hayes of El Paso, TX, Gerald Hayes (Jessica) of Logan, UT and John Mark Hayes of Mount Vernon; Grandchildren April, Nikkita, Cody, Stephen Jr., Kyra and Sarah; Great granddaughter Bristol.
He was preceded in death by his parents and extended family.
Calling hours will be at the Lasater Funeral Home on Saturday, February 27, 2021 from 3:00 – 6:00pm with a funeral service at 6:00pm. An ash scattering service will be held at a later date.
